What Caught My Attention

Ā
Before we get into this week's blog...
Ā
People ask me why I use so many metaphors.
Ā
There's a reason for that.
Ā
I've always understood things better when I can connect something unfamiliar to something I already understand.
Ā
Once I see the pattern... I understand it.
Ā
Ready?
Ā
Here's what caught my attention over the last couple of weeks.
At the time, none of it seemed connected.
It was just a bunch of little moments that made me stop for a second.
Looking back... They were all trying to tell the same story
Ā
---
Ā
I've had about three different blog ideas over the last week and a half.
Ā
None of them felt right.
Ā
Every time I'd sit down to write...
Ā
life happened.
Ā
Laundry.
Ā
Dishes.
Ā
Readings.
Ā
Workshops.
Ā
Answering emails.
Ā
Then I got sick.
Ā
I'd write a little.
Ā
Walk away.
Ā
Come back.
Ā
Still wasn't it.
Ā
Some weeks are just like that.
Ā
The other day I watched this random video of someone cleaning old bricks.
Ā
I don't know why that one stuck with me.
Ā
It just did.
Ā
They used soda.
Ā
Years of dirt and gunk disappeared.
Ā
Suddenly you could see details that had been there the whole time.
Ā
That made me stop for a second.
Ā
Sometimes all it takes is looking at something a little differently.
Ā
Wipe away a little dirt.
Ā
See what catches your attention this time.
Ā
After that I was texting with a friend.
Ā
I happened to look up from my front porch and took a picture of the clouds.
Ā
I sent it to her.
Ā
Later I went back to the text.
Ā
Looking at the picture...
Ā
I started noticing things I hadn't noticed before.
Ā
Sharper lines.
Ā
More depth.
Ā
More detail.
Ā
No filter.
Ā
A few days later I was talking to another good friend.
Ā
For some reason...
Ā
the clouds caught my attention again.
Ā
So I sent her another picture.
Ā
She zoomed in...
Ā
and pointed out something I completely missed.
Ā
My first reaction was trying to make sense of it.
Ā
Then I caught myself.
Ā
Maybe neither one of us needed the answer right then.
Ā
Maybe we just needed another perspective while we figured out what we were even looking at.
Ā
Hmm...
Ā
Funny how life works like that.
Ā
Same sky.
Ā
Different perspective.
Ā
Two things really can be true at the same time.
Ā
At the time...
Ā
none of those moments seemed connected.
Ā
I just kept noticing them.
Ā
Then the pattern started showing up.
Ā
So I went looking through my emails.
Ā
The more I read...
Ā
the more I realized your questions sounded a lot like my last two weeks.
Ā
I just sat there for a second.
Ā
That's where I started seeing the pattern.
Ā
So I pulled a few of them out.
Ā
---
Ā
"Why do I keep coming back to this?"
Ā
As I was reading emails like this...
Ā
I realized I'd been doing the exact same thing with this blog.
Ā
I'd write a little.
Ā
Walk away.
Ā
Come back.
Ā
I wasn't stuck.
Ā
I was figuring something out.
Ā
Maybe it isn't asking us to keep thinking about it.
Ā
Maybe it's asking us why we keep coming back to it.
Ā
Not to keep spinning.
Ā
Keep looking.
Ā
Sometimes the answer isn't forcing yourself to move on.
Ā
Sometimes it's understanding what keeps pulling you back.
Ā
That's where I started seeing the pattern.
Ā
Maybe it's time to gather another perspective.
Ā
"My gut says one thing. My head says another."
Ā
That one took me right back to those cloud pictures.
Ā
I thought I saw everything.
Ā
Then someone else zoomed in...
Ā
and pointed out something I completely missed.
Ā
We were just looking at the same thing from two different perspectives.
Ā
Maybe you don't have to figure it all out today.
Ā
Maybe you just need to let another perspective sit there for a little while.
Ā
The longer I let it sit...
Ā
the more the pattern started showing up.
Ā
Maybe it's time to shift our perspective.
Ā
---
Ā
"Have I changed?"
Ā
That one took me right back to those old bricks.
Ā
Nothing was wrong with the foundation.
Ā
It just needed another look.
Ā
Wipe away another layer.
Ā
See what was already there.
Ā
Maybe this isn't about everything around you changing.
Ā
Maybe it's about being honest with yourself.
Ā
What still feels authentic to you?
Ā
What still deserves your time and energy?
Ā
Maybe that's what you've been uncovering all along.
Ā
Maybe it's time to test our perspective.
Ā
---
Ā
So knowing we have the New Moon coming up July 14th...
Ā
I'm keeping my eye on this one.
Ā
Looking back...
Ā
I don't think the last couple of weeks were ever about finding the answer.
Ā
They were about noticing.
Ā
Looking at things from different angles.
Ā
Listening.
Ā
Comparing.
Ā
Questioning.
Ā
Looking for the common denominator.
Ā
Taking something that feels complicated...
Ā
until you start seeing the pattern.
Ā
Once you start seeing that common denominator...
Ā
everything starts fitting together a little differently.
Ā
And once you start seeing where that next brick belongs...
Ā
that's when it's time to lay it.
