The Hydra, Achilles, and the Art of Band-Aiding Life

Notes from the Threshold

March 10th, 2026

This morning I woke up with one clear thought in my head.

Band-Aid it. Protect it. Keep moving.

Not exactly some grand spiritual download. More like the kind of advice you give yourself when life refuses to slow down just because something hurts.

I’ve been dealing with this stubborn sore on my thumb that keeps coming back. One shows up, heals, then a few more pop up in the exact same place like it’s playing some weird game of whack-a-mole.

At one point I jokingly started calling it a Hydra.

You know, like the myth where you cut one head off and three more grow back.

At the time it was just dark humor. A little Gen X coping mechanism.

But after a while it started getting annoying enough that I figured I should probably stop pretending it would magically fix itself and actually go see a doctor.

While I was there I also had them look at my foot. I’ve been dealing with pain there off and on for about a year. Nothing dramatic at first. Just one of those things you push through and keep moving.

But the last four months, helping my dad through some health challenges, I’ve been on my feet a lot more than usual.

Let’s just say that foot has some very strong opinions about that.

So the doctor starts looking at my thumb and mentions something called hydra psoriasis.

And I just sat there for a second thinking… wait a minute.

Hydra?

Funny how the mind works sometimes.

What started as a joke in my head suddenly had an actual name connected to it.

Then we started talking about my foot and she mentioned a few possibilities involving the Achilles area.

And of course that word stuck with me.

Hydra.

Achilles.

One problem multiplying like Hydra heads.

The other reminding you there’s always a place that needs protection.

Not weakness. Just the part of the body that needs a little more care.

That’s when the bigger thought started forming.

Maybe some things in life aren’t meant to be conquered immediately. Sometimes the smartest move is exactly what that first thought said when I woke up.

Band-Aid it. Take care of it. Keep moving.

Later that morning I did what I usually do when something symbolic starts bouncing around in my head.

I looked up.

Not at my personal astrology chart. Just at the sky.

Right now we’re in Pisces season, which tends to carry themes of healing, reflection, and paying attention to what’s happening beneath the surface.

Now I’ll be the first to say this ~ astrology really isn’t my lane. I’m not sitting around calculating charts all day.

But every once in a while something lines up in an interesting way and it makes me curious enough to take a look around.

And when I started looking at the stories tied to that region of the sky, the symbolism got even more interesting.

The myth of the Hydra teaches that brute force doesn’t always solve the problem. Hercules couldn’t just keep chopping off heads. The real solution was tending the wound so new ones wouldn’t grow back.

The story of Achilles reminds us that even the strongest heroes carry a place that needs protection.

And when you look up at that same part of the sky you’ll find other figures there too ~ the constellation Ophiuchus, often associated with healing and medicine, and the band of the Milky Way running through that region like a river of stars.

None of this is about your personal birth chart.

It’s just the sky above us.

And sometimes the stories written up there mirror things happening down here in ways that make you pause for a minute.

The thread running through all of it feels pretty simple.

Some things in life aren’t meant to be forced or conquered immediately.

Some things need patience.

Some things need attention.

Some things need care so they don’t get worse while life keeps moving.

Now anyone who knows me knows I’m not usually the “Band-Aid it and move on” type.

I like answers. Fixes. Solutions.

But maybe that’s part of the lesson too.

Maybe it isn’t about ignoring the problem or rushing to solve everything all at once.

Maybe it’s about tending to it.

Band-Aid it today.

Pay attention tomorrow.

Take the next step when it reveals itself.

Health.

Relationships.

Life in general.

Sometimes the end result turns out better when we stop trying to fix everything immediately and instead work through it step by step.

And if none of this resonates with you, that’s perfectly okay too.

Not every message is meant for every person.

But if something in here made you pause for a moment and think, then maybe this reflection was meant to find you today.

Funny enough, right after I finished sitting with these thoughts this morning, the song “Someday” by OneRepublic came on shuffle.

Seemed fitting.
